Chirurgeon (Imperial English: Doctor) Ereth'ran Vhalmar (E.D. October 4th 2168 - Present) is a well known Andoria-born Aenar neurologist, cited by many as one of our era's great pioneers in the field of inter-species meta-neurology. Chief among his accomplishments has been the first successful meta-neurological surgery, yielding the Empire's first artificially created telepath. The experiments leading up to this achievement, however, as well as the controversy surrounding them, are widely believed to have left his homeworld unsafe to him. He is referred to by many less in awe with his medical practices as "the Butcher of Talandria".

Presently, Ereth'ran Vhalmar is known to be in the employ of the Betazoid government, serving as chief of medicine for the Okharo Lake Institute for Meta-Neurology and investigating a number of means of reform and/or rehabilitation in Betazoid criminals.

Biography

Early life

Ereth'ran Vhalmar was born on E.D. 4 October 2168, the eldest of 3 children, to Vhalan Theran (c), Marik Shrathyl (t), Tylya Rys'theren (z) and Neruu Belarem (s), into the Ellyri keth. A thaan, this made his full name at the time Ereth'ran Vhalmar th'Tylneruu Ellyri. Raised at home by his zhavey (birthmother) up to the age of five, nothing of note is known about Vhalmar's childhood years following his introduction into the Aenar educational indoctrination system, until entry into the Lor'Tan Academy of Medicine in 2185.

Vhalmar's records at Lor'Tan, though exemplary in regard to academic achievements, are marked by numerous violent incidents. Over the six years his studies took, a total of 34 confrontations between Andorian and Aenar students were recorded which included Vhalmar. In two of these incidents he is known to have been injured, and though the extent is unknown, it is worth noting that both took place in 2187, the second incident following an unusual suicide by the Andorian student alleged responsible for the first.

E.D. 12 May 2191 successfully completed his education at the Lor'Tan Academy, specializing chiefly in Andorian Neurology, Xeno-Neurology and Psychopharmaceuticals.

Service to the Overseer

On E.D. 3 June 2191 Vhalmar was inducted into the Aenar Overseer's Office. Though initially put to use as an interrogation technician, this was soon reduced to a secondary duty, as Vhalmar was placed in the Aenar's faltering bio-research program under doctor Khan Eichmann, for the purpose of devising more efficient and reliable means of extracting information during interrogations. At the start of 2193 however the program was discontinued due to the use of the Agony Booth for purposes of interrogation being on the rise on Andoria.

Vhalmar was transferred yet again, this time to the medical team of the Andorian chirurgeon Thalis Vorothishria. Code-named Ascension the project was started by Emperor Tadashi Sato's decree to investigate the possibility of artificially (through medication, genetic alteration or cosmetic neurological surgery) inducing either permanent or temporary telepathy, in non-telepathic subjects. Lifeforms from all over, and beyond the Empire's space were brought to Andoria for study, however progress was slow. On E.D. 17 September 2196 doctor Vorothishria was exposed as a saboteur to the project, after she refused the Emperor's order to move on to Andorian trials. She was replaced by Vhalmar.

The Butcher of Talandria

Under Vhalmar's direction, the Ascension project changed dramatically. Almost overnight broad-spectrum research was aborted, and all focus was shifted to the surgical option. Though it was common practice to rely on the Andorian prison system for medical test subjects, under pressure to provide results Vhalmar instead used Andoria's genetic databanks to compose a list of candidates he believed would produce a higher than average probability that the planned procedures would take.

From this list, he managed to recruit 28 young volunteers from empoverished clans. Though all participants signed documents declaring themselves aware of the risks involved and warding the Overseer's Office and Ascension project of all liability, surviving candidates would later deny ever having seen them before, and accuse Vhalmar of having altered their perception of the documents as they read.

The first procedure took place on E.D. 3 February 2197, scarcely four months after Vhalmar took over the project. The procedure failed, and less than a week later procedure 2 took place. At the height of their efforts, the Ascension project's procedures were barely two days apart, and yielded 16 complete failures. Until procedure 17, on E.D. 13 March 2197, when the 17 years old student Chari Rothress, for 81 minutes, became the Terran Empire's first artificially created telepath. The experiment also proved, as was long expected, that in Andorians sight and telepathy could not co-exist.

It was after the announcement was made on E.D. 21 March 2197, declaring the breakthrough and the sacrifice of the patriots who had preceded it, while Vhalmar's research team was already on to their second attempt to recreate procedure 17's success, that the remaining volunteers went into hiding. The Andorian media put the pieces together in less than a day. 19 Dead. Vorothishria a martyr. The Aenar called in Starfleet to quell the angry protesters rallied around the victims' next of kin, demanding Vhalmar be made to answer through the Ushaan. Both the Ascension Project (just prior to being relocated to Earth) and the Overseer's office disassociated themselves from Vhalmar's actions.

On E.D. 26 March 2197 Ereth'ran Vhalmar was forced to flee Andoria.

Present

Betazed

Although nothing is known of the time in between, Vhalmar was not seen again until he made his appearance on Betazed nearly a full year later. Where he was appointed as the Chief of Medicine and chairman of the board to the Okharo Lake Mental Institute, an asylum rotating through some of Betazed's most dangerous criminally insane telepaths, which has since been renamed to the Okharo Lake Institute for Meta-Neurology.

Vhalmar is believed to be in league with a company or initiative, newly formed in 2200, known as Enterni-Life.
