Andoria, a young moon orbiting a gas giant, orbiting a star 30 times larger than Sol standard, is a high radiation world with heavy geothermal activity below its planet-covering ice-sheets. Without the heat of the geothermal events and suboceanic vulcanic activity, providing Andoria's unique cycle of 'seasons', the planet would likely not have had any familiar variety of life at all, where the white light of its giant star alone would have made the presence of liquid water impossible, Andoria being 300 times farther removed from its primary than Earth from Sol.

The Andorian Calendar

With Andoria's companion gas giant taking approximately 899.1 Earth years to complete a single orbit around its primary, traditional Andorian calendars tracked the movement of Andor in Andoria's skies. Andoria orbits Andor in just under 60 full Andorian days. Their calendar in a result consists of 10 equal months, rounded up for a total of 600 days. Andoria having 30 hour days, this totals 720 Terran days, close to two solar years. It is worth noting that as a sideeffect of being a satellite world, Andoria is cut off from the light of Procyon completely for 18 of the 60 days it takes to orbit Andor.

When in 2131 Andoria surrendered to the will of the Terran Empire, this calendar was tied to the Empire standard Earthdate. An eleventh eight-day month was created, Pax, named in honor of Emperor Paxton II, during which the end of the war and Andoria assuming its rightful place under the Empire is celebrated.

Andor vs. Andoria

The existance of both an Andor (the green-blue Jovian orbited of which Andoria is a moon) and an Andoria (the actual Andorian homeworld) has often been a source of confusion to non-natives to the system. Although partially based in speculation, it is assumed early Andorians named the gas giant clearly visible in their sky in one of their early religions, and over time began to name themselves Andorians in its honor. Andoria itself has over the course of Andoria history held numerous names, most persistant among which the Graalen proper noun Feroan.

Following alien contact, Andoria became the commonly accepted translation for this term.

The Andorian State

Originally ruled by a council of clan elders, from the three hundred most powerful clans on the planet, following the conquest of Andoria their role has been reduced to a day to day administrative one. The highest authority on Andoria today is placed in the hands of a small subspecies known as the Aenar. Once hunted by Andorians who thought them to be demonic spectres, this species had managed to survive in hiding since the beginning of Andoria's industrial revolution, at least seven hundred years ago. Long enough to be forgotten completely, they only presented themselves to the Empire's Starfleet in 2130 at the height of Emperor Paxton's campaign against Andoria. In reward for proving instrumental in the subjugation of Andoria, and trusted for their lingering resentment toward their blue cousins, the Aenar are now united under a single overseer, and use their telepathic abilities to root out subversion and sabotage on their homeworld.

Over the years the Aenar Overseer's authority has grown, along with the office's efficiency. Where initially the Emperor or his advisors were needed to sign off on all initiatives, in present day the Aenar Overseer is the voice of the Emperor on Andoria. Currently, the Aenar Overseer's office is held by Th'Elerin Paleb.
